Magnetotherapy Pain relief made easy

What is magnetotherapy?
Pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMF) are low-frequency electromagnetic waves that can help bone and joint structures strengthen their microstructure when damaged or weak. Magnetotherapy is the physical therapy most commonly used at home for pain and osteoarticular issues.
What is magnetotherapy used for?

Main indications

The electromagnetic signal penetrates into joint structures and exerts an anti-inflammatory effect, reactivating the bone and cartilage metabolism. Studies have shown clear reductions in joint stiffness after a few sessions of magnetotherapy, with enormous benefits in carrying out daily activities, with no pain and with greater freedom of movement.

Magnetotherapy promotes the healing of fractures, with a lower incidence of adverse events such as delayed consolidation, osteonecrosis or the need for reoperation. In addition, the application of magnetotherapy significantly decreases post-fracture pain. The therapy can also be used over casts and braces.

Very severe twinges and pain are the first symptoms of bone oedema, a very common condition caused by an excessive accumulation of fluid in the structures of the affected bone. Magnetic therapy is the most frequently prescribed physical therapy by doctors in cases of bone oedema and acts by reducing pain and inflammation in the affected area and stimulating the regeneration of bone tissue.

Magnetic therapy is also very useful in the event of acute inflammation (after injuries, sprains or surgery) and chronic inflammation (shoulder tendonitis, knee tendonitis, carpal tunnel, epicondylitis, etc.). Therapy improves functional recovery and limits the intake of anti-inflammatory drugs.

Clinical magnetotherapy studies

Globus devices include all the main programmes to treat the conditions indicated in the clinical studies below

THE STUDY
Effect of stimulation by low-frequency pulsed electromagnetic fields in subjects with femoral neck fracture. E. Betti et al. 1999.

OBJECTIVE
To evaluate the effectiveness of PEMF on subjects with femoral neck fracture undergoing surgery within 3 days of trauma.

PROTOCOL
8 hours of daily stimulation for 90 days (75Hz – 30 Gauss).

CONCLUSIONS
The application of PEMF following femur fracture has been shown to be effective for complete bone consolidation. The PEMF placebo group experienced more complications.
The pain perceived by the patients was significantly less in the protocol subjects with active PEMF.

RESULTS

THE STUDY
The effect of pulsed electromagnetic fields in the treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee and cervical spine. Report of randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials. Trock et al. 1994.

OBJECTIVE
To test the effects of PEMF on osteoarthritis of the knee and cervical spine on subjects assessed for pain, activities of daily living, pain on movement and joint stiffness.

PROTOCOL
18 treatments of 30 minutes, 3 to 5 times per week (12Hz – 25 Gauss).

CONCLUSIONS
Magnetotherapy proves to be effective for the treatment of osteoarthritis with clear improvements in daily activities and a substantial decrease in joint stiffness and pain.
Reduction of inflammation.

RESULTS

THE STUDY

Effects of pulsed electromagnetic fields on patient recovery after arthroscopic surgery: a prospective, randomised, double-blind study. Zorzi et al. 2017.

OBJECTIVE
To evaluate the efficacy of PEMF after arthroscopic knee surgery.

PROTOCOL
Started 5 days after surgery. 6 hours of PEMF daily for 90 days (75Hz – 30 Gauss).

CONCLUSIONS
Magnetotherapy is a valuable treatment to reduce inflammation and promote healing post arthroscopic surgery, without side effects. The therapy improves functional recovery and limits the intake of anti-inflammatory drugs.
